Snowmobile

AWS Snowmobile is an exabyte-scale data transfer service for getting customer data into AWS, delivered as a 45-foot shipping container shipped to the customer site and connected via fibre to the customer's network, exposing an NFS mount.

Statistics

  • 10PB-100PB storage capacity per Snowmobile.
  • 1Tb/s transfer rates, via link aggregation over multiple 40Gb/s links, allowing a complete fill in ~10 days.

Security

Snowmobile units are operated by AWS personnel, and are GPS tracked, with 24x7 surveillance and alarm monitoring. While in transit they'll be accompanied by ascort security vehicle.

Data is encrypted at rest using customer-supplied keys from KMS.

Secure erasure is performed after the data is ingested into AWS.
