<p>Overlay networks are networks layered atop existing networks. They're logical abstractions that provide some means of resolving an identifier for a node on the network for another, and should be unaware of connecting infrastructure.</p>
<p>This allows nodes to appear as if they were on the same <abbr title="Local Area Network">LAN</abbr> when they may be connected over the public Internet.</p>
