Overlay

Overlay networks are networks layered atop existing networks. They're logical abstractions that provide some means of resolving an identifier for a node on the network for another, and should be unaware of connecting infrastructure.

This allows nodes to appear as if they were on the same LAN when they may be connected over the public Internet.
